International Graduate Student Guidelines for Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

  1. The student must:
    • Attend the required CPT workshop given by the International Center. A student must attend a CPT workshop for purely informational purposes before obtaining the job offer and collecting the documentation. However, the student will later attend another workshop to submit the request to the IC advisor.
    • Obtain the CPT Request form.
    • Obtain the Academic/Faculty Advisor Recommendation form.
  2. The student is responsible:
    • To have an official offer letter from a company.
    • To identify a faculty member in the area of the CPT.
    • To ask the faculty member to approve the project and agree to read the report that is required at the end of each term in which the student is registered for CPT. (The report MUST be sent to InterPro, not faculty, for processing.)
    • To have the FACULTY sign the CPT Academic/Faculty Advisor Recommendation form.
    • To bring all forms and the offer letter to the InterPro office at 2633 CSE (734) 763-0480 or gailcarr@umich.edu for processing. Please allow at least 24 hours for processing.
    • Meet with a representative from the International Center. See #4 below.
    • NOTE: The above criteria will apply to a non-paying, non-compensating internship as well.
NOTE: If the student is a Ph.D. candidate, the student will be assessed the candidacy fee for the CPT.
NOTE: Tuition assessment above the approved credit hours is the responsibility of the student.

  3. The InterPro office graduate advisor:
    • Will review the forms for correctness.
    • Will register the student for the CPT course. Following registration the student must check on Wolverine Access to see that the CPT course has been added to their transcript.
  4. Once the course is added to the transcript, the student must submit the completed paperwork at the end of a CPT workshop. Bring all the items listed on the CPT Request Form to the meeting at the International Center. You can find out more about CPT at http://internationalcenter.umich.edu/immig/fvisa/f_cpt.html.
